Thornleigh Golf Centre

Thornleigh, NSW, Australia

Synthetic turf is the most fantastic product.  It can be used for a myriad of applications creating effective, performance based surfaces for many different sports and activities.  An excellent example of this is the Thornleigh Golf Centre in Sydney, NSW.

Thornleigh Golf Centre, Sydney – a marvellous golf driving range featuring some of the best ideas from around the world.

These include a full synthetically turfed and contoured landing area with raised greens, synthetic sand bunkers and water hazards.

We asked Paul Selig, Director at Thornleigh, for his throughts on how the Range was performing.   “Twelve months into the journey we are very pleased with the performance of the turf surface, stability of the infill sand and turf has been excellent, ball roll has been to expectations. The ability of the greens to “hold” a well hit shot is excellent and enhances our customer’s experience.  The additional effort and cost that went into getting the greens right has been fully vindicated.”

The 15,000m2, 56 hitting bay, golf driving range is laid completely with TigerTurf synthetic grass providing realistic greens for the golfer to aim for, as well as water hazards and sand bunkers to avoid; all represented by appropriately coloured turf.

The first of its type in Australasia, the design includes a sophisticated drainage system and an automated ball collection system which returns the golf balls to the shop.  Paul says “Our base objectives of increasing the life of our range balls, reducing ball loss and improving the quality of the balls (i.e. no mud, scratches) has been achieved if not exceeded. The really good news is we haven’t had to fertilise or mow the turf once!!!”

TigerTurf worked with the Thornleigh developers to finalse the design.  The base construction required over 150,000 tonne of soil to be trucked in.  Once the base was completed TigerTurf installed the 15,000m2 of turf.

The turf was a specialist system developed specifically for purpose with ball roll being an important attribute for all but the greens where ball hold was required.

The driving range was completed with the installation of the highest fence in the Southern Hemisphere.
