Cancellations a thing of the past at Michaels Ave

By admin on January 8, 2017

The first night game at the new turf at Michaels Ave, under international standard match lighting, drew a big crowd, creating a fantastic atmosphere; a very positive signs for the future of the Ellerslie AFC and its members.

For many years the club struggled with the perennial problem facing many football clubs around NZ; how to accommodate all players with training and game time on the fields.   Auckland’s “four seasons in one day” weather patterns was the core  problem as the club struggled with field capacity, especially with demands of over 120 club teams and schools wanting to train and play.  Mark Weipers, President of the Ellerslie AFC, commented, “The club was managing to meet only 20% of the capacity needed to meet its training requirements.  For years alternatives had to be found, calling in a lot favours to find suitable training facilities.  The Club, in association with the Auckland Council, embarked on a creating a long term facility that would meet the needs of the community for many years.  “It is estimated our training capacity will increase to 60% with the completion of the main pitch and training field” says Mark. “It’s also great to have the assurance that, when other sports fields are closed, we can continue planning and scheduling training and games with confidence” he adds.

The project includes a full size international field constructed to meet FIFA 1* accreditation, plus a half size warm up and training pitch.  A second stage is planned which will hopefully see the relocation of the amenities block which will enable the club to extend the training pitch increasing capacity further.

A significant element in the completion of the project was to fully consider the special environmental status of the greater Michaels Ave Reserve.  The results of extensive testing undertaken on the impact of the rubber infill showed the water and air quality was well within workplace and ambient air quality guidelines, alleviating concerns raised.   The Auckland Council will continue to monitor air and water quality for the next two years to ensure there is no future environmental impact.

Laid with TigerTurf’s Pinnacle 40P football system, the field is ideal for players of all levels from kids through to senior teams.   It is created from blades that look, feel and play like natural turf, with a 10mm rubber underlay and layers of sand and crumbed rubber in the grass.  It is the result of years of research and development to replicate the characteristics of natural turf while enhancing player performance and safety.  Using TenCate’s patented Evolution yarn, renowned for its resilience and performance, the fibres literally “stand up” to intensive play.

The feedback from players has been all positive.  “The teams wanted a faster surface, and they got it” said Mark, “and it’s good on the legs”.
