Tauranga Hockey Celebrate “New Beginnings”

By admin on January 8, 2017

Tauranga Hockey Association celebrated the opening of its two new WETT Pro hockey pitches on April 6th with the “New Beginnings Hockey Festival”.  Players from all over the region, from the Associations Fun Sticks (years 1-2) to NZ’s Black Sticks tried out the new turfs, along with “have a go” opportunities for anyone who wanted to “have a go”.  Mixed with lots of family friendly activities during the day, it was an exciting day for the Bay’s Hockey community.

The two new fields will enable Tauranga Hockey to hold international matches and national level competitions, the first being the women’s Four Nations International Tournament being hosted in New Zealand from April 10-21st.  Games will feature New Zealand, Argentina, Korea and the USA with the last round and finals being played on the new fields on April 20 and 21.

Replacing the two aging turfs was a major job.  The existing irrigated field had its old carpet taken up, the rubber pad repaired before being topped by TigerTurf’s WETT Pro surface.  The second turf, a send-dress field, was reconstructed in a process that involved re-levelling the base to “billiard table” surface perfection, new fencing and kerbed borders, completely asphalted and topped with a new rubber pad and finally the WETT Pro grass laid.
