Surfaces of all kinds can be produced where different nets and wickets can provide different spin, speed and bounce characteristics.
How do Synthetic Cricket Wickets and Batting Cages assist with Skills Development?

Artificial wickets provide a stable, safe surface for bowlers. The non-slip surface, well-drained and never muddy, means fewer injuries and more consistent bowling patterns.

True bounce off a wicket is valued by bowlers and batsmen and can be difficult to achieve in hard-working turf cricket practice nets. Artificial grass wickets even the odds for batsmen, who do not have to contend with the erratic bounce produced by most grass wickets, which can give an unfair advantage to the bowler.

Practice wickets throughout the world of cricket are notorious for misbehaving but, on a synthetic wicket, players no longer have to be afraid to get behind the ball. This makes it easier to develop the batting skills required by young batsmen. Batsmen learn to bat confidently on an artificial grass wicket, which produces even pace without the wicked changes in ball flight often experienced on natural grass cricket pitches. No hidden terrors lurk within a well constructed artificial wicket, so young batsmen can concentrate on their stroke play.

Bowlers must try harder to bowl the ball that will get results, on a consistently performing synthetic pitch. They cannot rely on the uneven bounce experienced on a grass wicket. The increased effort to get results stands them in good stead when bowling to a skilled batsman.

The synthetic grass surface is also more forgiving on joints that are jarred by repeated run-ups on a hard, drought-stricken grass wicket.

In any case, Synthetic turf cricket pitches can sustain significantly more use than natural grass pitches which must be “rested” to allow regeneration of the grass. A natural grass pitch begins to deteriorate after about 250 hours play per season, while synthetic turf can be played on 24 hours a day 7 days a week – dependent on good regular maintenance.
The general argument against synthetic surfaces
The general argument against synthetic surfaces is that they do not provide the variety of play that makes the game exciting and would take away some of the skills from the game. This criticism was leveled when tennis faced the same synthetic/natural grass dilemma. Subsequently, it has been shown that a consistent synthetic surface does in fact dramatically improve the standard of tennis.
The general argument for synthetic surfaces
It would, therefore, follow that all cricket at junior levels and grassroots, and even upper levels of the game, would benefit from playing on artificial pitches. Young cricketers playing on a reliable pitch, with good pace and even bounce, will develop confidence and good bowling and batting habits.
