Black Sticks International Training Facility

Auckland, New Zealand

The new Black Sticks International Training Facility

combines latest TigerTurf technologies

New Zealand Black Sticks now have a training home on North Harbour Hockey’s upgraded ‘sand turf’, previously known as Harbour 4 and now the Black Sticks team’s own long-awaited international training facility. The top-rated TigerTurf WETT Pro surface in vibrant blue is a perfect match for the popular WETT Pro installed by TigerTurf previously, which has been North Harbour’s surface of choice.

TigerTurf completed the new, international-standard WETT Pro hockey pitch for North Harbour Hockey. We were especially proud to be commissioned to construct the home training pitch for New Zealand’s own Black Sticks.  This project for our national hockey heroes incorporates a few outstanding factors.  TigerTurf WETT Pro is our most technically advanced hockey surface, which is fully irrigated by the new Ecocept system and tank storage, and brilliantly lit by Lumosa LED lights.

TigerTurf Lumosa LED touch lighting system at new Black Sticks facility

TigerTurf has replaced the existing halides lamp with the new Lumosa LED touch lighting system, illuminating the pitch with a clear white light that resembles daylight. More efficient, cost-effective and more focused on the pitch, the LED system reduces the amount of light spill beyond the pitch. The lights can be controlled remotely through the Lumosa Touch App providing immediate control over the timing and power level of the lighting system.

TenCate Ecocept performance base incorporates drainage and shock pad

After removing the old turf and rubber pad, the TigerTurf construction team prepared the site for the new Ecocept shock pad and drainage system. This system replaces the need for extensive drainage beneath the pitch. The Ecocept also offers a softer feel underfoot, which enables players to take full advantage of the 3D skills of the modern game.

Up to 80% of the material used in manufacturing the Ecocept base system consists of recycled plastics and rubber tyres, including redundant synthetic hockey pitches.

The reconstructed pitch provides splendid WETT Pro facility for Black Sticks

The construction process has included removing and replacing the perimeter fencing with new paths around the pitch. The work carried out also included building to the new specifications to reach “global’ level FIH accredited.

An agreement between Hockey New Zealand and North Harbour Hockey will provide for a pavilion with offices and storage facilities to be built on-site, completing the new hockey home for New Zealand’s Black Sticks.
