Creating a Sporting Advantage at BLENNZ Homai Campus

Auckland, New Zealand

“Everyone at BLENNZ is extremely happy with the finished cricket pitch,” commented Dean Davids, BLENNZ Site Manager. “Thanks to the TigerTurf team for a professional job from start to finish.”

TigerTurf undertook a full-build project to construct a cricket wicket at the BLENNZ (Blind and Low Vision Education Network NZ) Homai campus.  BLENNZ Homai Campus, a school for the blind and visually impaired, contracted TigerTurf to install a special cricket wicket and multi-sports area at the school.  A bright yellow TigerTurf Advantage cricket wicket was intalled, yellow being more visible to partially sighted people. Technically advanced and durable, Advantage is an outstanding, versatile turf for several sports providing good traction to avoid slipping.

Even in the middle of winter the new turf will prove to be a reliably dry, safe playing surface for any outdoor activity, giving the Institute an extra outdoor sports area.

The Sine shock pad installed beneath the Advantage turf adds comfort underfoot and effective drainage to keep the surface dry. It works in tandem with the dynamic free-draining base, which includes sub-soil drains and channel drains to collect surface water run-off so the surface of the cricket pitch will remain dry and open for play all year round.

Being the first of it’s kind in New Zealand, the facility includes the cricket pitch, a running track down the side and will also be used for games of dodge ball and bowls, providing more fun and competition for the students.

Concrete footpaths have been installed for easy access to the pitch, and brightly coloured turf in contrasting colours to clearly differentiate each area will act as visual aids for partially sighted players.

Good timing and keen hearing is important in this version of the game. Blind cricketers play with a ball that rattles while in flight and while rolling, and use metal wickets that make a clear sound when struck. Apart from that, the game is played as a regular cricket game, but the players have extremely sharp hearing and are skilled in locating the direction and speed of the ball as it rattles.

The players call out to each other throughout the game to avoid collisions, and to tell their teammates what they are doing and where they are. They also bowl underarm for greater control over direction and speed.

Now the cricketers can practise on an excellent wicket, working on their skills all year, ready for competition in the summer months – and the competition is just as intense as in the regular game of cricket.
