The project began with the careful removal of the existing rubber infill. Using an SMG machine, the rubber crumb was scooped from the surface and collected into one‑tonne bags for transport and disposal. Once the infill was cleared, the old turf was uplifted and removed from site. With the surface stripped back to the aggregate base, TigerTurf prepared the foundation by sweeping it with a road sweeper and applying a layer of fines to fill any small gaps. This ensured a smooth, even platform ready for the new system. Only once the base met the required standard was the Pure PTTM surface installed, bringing the field up to the latest international expectations for synthetic football turf. Pure PTTM represented a significant step forward for the venue.
As a non‑infill system, it removes the need for rubber or sand infill entirely, offering a cleaner and more environmentally responsible alternative to traditional synthetic turf. Without loose infill, there is far less risk of microplastic migration into surrounding areas or stormwater systems, an issue that has become increasingly important for councils and sports trusts across the country. The absence of infill also reduces day‑to‑day maintenance, as there is no material to redistribute, top up, or remove from the edges of the field. For facility operators, this translates into lower ongoing costs and a more predictable maintenance schedule. For players, Pure PTTM delivers a surface designed to feel and respond like high‑quality natural grass. Its dense, textured fibres provide consistent traction, reliable ball roll, and stable footing, supporting confident play across all levels of football. Developed through extensive testing with athletes, coaches, and performance specialists, the system is engineered to offer comfort and stability without relying on infill to achieve those qualities.
This makes it particularly well suited to football, where predictable ball behaviour and safe player movement are essential. The single football field line marking at Bill McKinlay Park was integrated cleanly into the surface, ensuring clarity without compromising the natural‑grass aesthetic. The completed installation has given Bill McKinlay Park Trust a future‑focused playing surface that supports both community and competitive use. By choosing Pure PTTM, the trust has invested in a system that aligns with modern expectations around sustainability, player experience, and long‑term value. For TigerTurf, the project stands as a milestone—introducing Pure PTTM to New Zealand and demonstrating how advanced non‑infill technology can enhance the performance and environmental profile of local sports facilities. As the field continues to serve players and the wider community, it reflects the shared commitment of both organisations to delivering high‑quality sporting environments that endure.
