The Project

A new home for high-performance hockey
Hamilton Boys’ High School has a strong history in New Zealand secondary school hockey, having previously won Rankin Cups and produced players who have gone on to represent New Zealand. With a strong hockey programme and an active local hockey community, the school set out to create a high-quality facility capable of supporting training and competition. TigerTurf was commissioned to deliver the complete 6,000m² hockey facility, including the playing surface, base construction, fencing, paths and sports lighting.

WETT Pro hockey surface
At the heart of the facility is TigerTurf WETT Pro, a high-performance hockey surface designed to provide the playing characteristics required by hockey players at a competitive level. The new pitch provides Hamilton Boys’ High School with a consistent playing surface for training and competition, supporting the school's ongoing hockey programme.

Ecocept base construction
Beneath the WETT Pro surface, Hamilton Boys’ High selected TigerTurf Ecocept as part of the pitch's base construction. Ecocept is a sports base system incorporating drainage and shock-pad functions into the overall pitch construction. For Hamilton Boys’ High, the Ecocept base was installed across the 6,000m² hockey field. Ecocept also incorporates recycled materials. Project information states that the system used for this installation comprised approximately 90% recycled materials, including material equivalent to approximately eight million plastic bags and 5,000 car tyres.

Lumosa LED sports lighting
To extend the use of the facility into the evening, the pitch was completed with a Lumosa LED sports lighting system. The lighting provides focused illumination across the playing area and can be operated automatically according to the school's playing schedule or controlled remotely via a mobile application.

A complete hockey solution
The completed Hamilton Boys’ High School facility brings together TigerTurf WETT Pro, an Ecocept base and Lumosa LED sports lighting, providing a purpose-built hockey venue for one of New Zealand's leading secondary school hockey programmes. The project also represents the fourth WETT hockey pitch constructed in Hamilton, further contributing to the facilities available to the Waikato hockey community.

Hamilton Boys’ High School now has a purpose-built hockey facility designed to support high-level training, competition and the continued development of its hockey programme.

Witnessing the capabilities demonstrated at Hamilton Boys High School, Waikato Diocesan School for Girls eagerly enlisted TigerTurf to revitalize their hockey facilities, transitioning from an older TigerTurf surface with Netball and Tennis line markings to a top-level hockey surface.

Metro Park Hockey

TigerTurf's multi-sport technicolour installation is a standout feature at the new hockey turf at Metro Park Hockey for the Hockey Hibiscus Trust. Teams warm up on the new sports arena, cheered on by supporters from the side-line seats, while players’ families enjoy an action-packed park. In 2019, TigerTurf constructed the main hockey field, installing the TenCate EcoCept base drainage system beneath the TigerTurf WETT Pro hockey surface. Phase 1 also included the installation of Lumosa LED lights, providing clear, safe illumination for both day and night games.

New Wett Pro hockey pitch for the Otago Hockey Association and Kings High School

TigerTurf constructed a new Wett Pro hockey pitch for the partnership of Kings High School and the Otago Hockey Association. We used an Ecocept base to stabilise and drain the site, implementing a system to drain the surface during major weather events and manage excess water within the site itself. Hockey is a tremendously popular sport in New Zealand for players and spectators. Our national teams compete successfully at international level, inspiring young hockey players to dedicate hours to practice and competitive play. This enthusiasm has led to schools and the Otago Hockey Association having more teams and talented players than the existing hockey facilities could accommodate. As the game has become faster, the players work hard to out-manoeuvre the opposition by pushing their ball skills to new levels. On a perfect surface, the impossible becomes possible – but New Zealand hockey needs young hockey players to develop into skilled, top-level players by playing on hockey pitches designed for this standard of play. At the same time, the sport needs more of these hockey pitches for our regional teams to use. Modern technical hockey surfaces bring teams the responsive, high-speed consistency required for players to develop skills that would be too high-risk on a natural turf surface. Add incredibly durable to low maintenance, and the TigerTurf Wett Pro hockey pitch goes to the top of the list.

Tauranga Boys College

The magnificent deep blue TigerTurf WETT Pro hockey pitch at Tauranga Boys’ College replaced the well-worn, sand-dressed vintage TigerTurf hockey surface laid fourteen years ago. Tauranga Boys’ Hockey teams are set to excel on their high performance pitch.

Tarawera High School

TigerTurf has installed a full-size hockey pitch, four netball courts and a perimeter running track for Tarawera High School – the students already have a jump start to 2016!

St Cuthbert’s College

A TigerTurf WETT Pro pitch is the best hockey surface – the teams at St Cuthbert’s already appreciate the advanced technology of this surface, producing improved control of both stick and ball.

Rotorua Boys High School

Bright, fresh TigerTurf tennis courts and a synthetic hockey turf training facility have replaced the damaged, worn tennis courts at Rotorua Boys’ High School – together, the school and TigerTurf have given the boys a sporting advantage for the next two decades.

Pinehurst School

The TigerTurf Evo Pro multi-sport facility at Pinehurst School in Auckland has had enormously positive responses. The new turf is already encouraging the students to participate in more sports, just as the school hoped.

Sherwood Primary School

TigerTurf turned the wet, soggy playing field at Sherwood Primary School into an all-weather multi -sport centre. The hockey teams not only have an FIH compliant surface to practise their skills on, but they also have a head start with sponsorship from TigerTurf!

National Hockey Centre

The New Zealand Vantage Black Sticks now have a magnificent TigerTurf WETT Pro pitch at the North Harbour Hockey Club, one of four new high performance TigerTurf WETT Pro pitches at this world standard hockey facility.
