New Wett Pro hockey pitch for the Otago Hockey Association and Kings High School

Otago Hockey prioritised easy access, adequate car parking and considered site requirements

After five years of planning and discussions, the need for a third Dunedin regional hockey pitch accredited to Federation of International Hockey (FIH) Global level had become urgent. Clearly, it was time for action. Choosing the best site to meet the project requirements was an important consideration. With the busy town centre already experiencing traffic and parking pressures, locating the facility outside the town centre provided easier access and parking for training sessions and game days. The Association also considered infrastructure and construction requirements when planning the new facility, with a focus on selecting systems and materials appropriate for the site and its intended use.

Shared facilities create additional benefits for partners

Kings High School offered part of its school grounds for the new hockey pitch and was willing to assist with funding the project. The partnership between Otago Hockey Association and Kings High School created opportunities for the Otago hockey community, Kings High School hockey and visiting school teams. National tournaments, regional games and regular training sessions allow young players to watch and learn from first-class hockey players as they develop their skills. These factors helped establish the site and allowed the project to get underway. Shared sports facilities provide opportunities for more New Zealanders to participate in local sport and can support schools, clubs and wider sporting communities.

The WETT Pro hockey facility at the school provides a dedicated, high-performance surface for hockey and supports the ongoing use of the facility by Otago sports teams, school players and the wider hockey community.
