{"id":1728,"date":"2020-02-19T11:01:14","date_gmt":"2020-02-18T23:01:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tigerturf.com\/nz\/?p=1728"},"modified":"2024-05-20T10:14:50","modified_gmt":"2024-05-19T22:14:50","slug":"playground-safety-regulations-and-tigerturf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tigerturf.com\/nz\/playground-safety-regulations-and-tigerturf\/","title":{"rendered":"Playground Safety Regulations and TigerTurf"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Ensuring Playground Safety is the responsibility of everyone<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ensuring playground safety is essential, not only for the protection of the children using the equipment but to also mitigate risk for the early learning centres, schools, councils and other organisations in charge of these play areas.<\/p>\n<p>All playgrounds which feature playground equipment, such as in schools, council parks, and early childhood centres, must comply with the NZ Standard for Playground Equipment and Surfacing <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.standards.govt.nz\/catalog\/5828%3A2015%28NZS%29\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NZS 5828:2018<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.standards.govt.nz\/catalog\/5828%3A2015%28NZS%29\/view\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/a> As a legal requirement, it is the responsibility of providers to demonstrate that the playground structures, equipment, and surfacing are safe and meet the relevant criteria.<\/p>\n<p>The standards are quite specific and include (but not limited too) such things as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Equipment over 600 mm needs to be on loose-fill or synthetic safety surface.<\/li>\n<li>Equipment over 600 mm needs a clearance of 1.5 metres fall space around the equipment.<\/li>\n<li>No climbing equipment of any height should be situated on concrete unless a suitable attenuation surface (shock pad) is used with correct fall space.<\/li>\n<li>Gaps between fence palings should be 100 mm or less.<\/li>\n<li>Equipment over 600mm requires a 600-850mm barrier.\u00a0 Definition of a barrier: A guardrail with non &#8211;
