How to turf your garden in 10 steps

By j.finnegan on October 2, 2018

It stays green all year round, it’s easy to maintain and it’s pet friendly… what is not love? Artificial grass, or “fake grass” as it is commonly known, is a great addition to any garden. If you’re looking to lay the surface by yourself, make sure you follow the 10 steps below for a seamless installation.

Step 1

Before you start, check you have all the tools you might need to hand. You can find our checklist here.

Step 2

Grab your shovel and get digging, it’s time to strip the old lawn! Consider hiring a turf lifter if you want to get this step done quickly.

Step 3

Add a border – this will be used to attach the turf edges to. We’d recommend timber, but brick, concrete and even metal will also do the trick.

Step 4

Remove any debris (large stones and roots) from the soil and level the surface out. This can be done with a wooden plank, or using a compactor. We often get asked if can you lay artificial grass on dirt, and the answer is yes, but only if you follow this step.

Step 5

Next add a thin layer of sharp sand and compact again. You’ll need to do this to a depth of roughly 25-35mm. We’d recommend following this with a layer of geotextile, to prevent any roots or weeds growing under the turf.

Step 6

Now it’s time to lay the artificial grass. Start at the borders and roll the surface out so that it lies taught and ripple-free.

Step 7

If necessary, trim the edges in line with the perimeter and then secure the grass to the frame using galvanized fixing nails. We’d recommend doing this every 15-20cm to keep the surface in place.

Step 8

Join any edges. To do this you should roll the edges back, add a line of joining tape (shiny side down) with adhesive on top. Re-align the edges to create a seamless joint and slowly and carefully work along the turf, pressing it into the wet adhesive to cure. Take your time with this step, it’s really important if you want a neat result.

Step 9

Nearly there! To finish, add a small amount of silica sand and brush it into the carpet. This will help to hold the grass blades in position and keep it looking fresh.

Step 10

Finally, take a step back, admire your brand-new garden…and ditch the lawn mower! After all your hard work, don’t forget to make sure you’ve read the 5 most common artificial grass maintenance mistakes to ensure you keep your lawn in tip top condition.
