They say the grass is always greener, and with <\/span>3G pitches<\/span><\/a> growing in popularity, some providers are now claiming they can even install 4G playing surfaces. You\u2019re probably thinking, what is a 4G pitch, and how do the differ from 3G fields? The current answer is that there isn\u2019t any difference, but the future is coming and, most likely, the future is 4G.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The current problem with this is that 4G pitches are yet to be backed by any formal standards by the sports\u2019 governing bodies, meaning those labelling their artificial grass have very little to support their claims. Instead, this is being used as a sales tool to entice buyers to invest in the \u2018latest advanced technology\u2019, making them increasingly popular. In fact, despite there being no such thing yet, even some football boots are being sold as \u201c4G pitch boots\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is a 4G, 3G, 2G or even 1G football pitch?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To keep things simple, we\u2019ve outlined the different types of <\/span>artificial grass<\/span><\/a> available below.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1G<\/span><\/b> \u2013 There can be confusion in the market as to what defines a first-generation pitch. However, the general consensus is that they are a non-infilled synthetic turf, also commonly known as \u2018astroturf\u2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2G<\/span><\/b> \u2013 Second generation artificial pitches are sand-based and have a carpet-style surface. These can be installed in <\/span>Multi Use Games Areas<\/span><\/a> (MUGA) as they are durable and weatherproof. The primary sport played on 2G pitches is <\/span>hockey<\/span><\/a>, just like this <\/span>one<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3G<\/span><\/b> \u2013 Third generation, the latest <\/span>artificial pitch<\/span><\/a> technology, and the most popular. 3G surfaces are made up of long pile synthetic grass with a mix of sand and rubber infill. This gives the unique texture of natural grass, but provides a more even and smooth play than the varied terrain of a muddy pitch. New technology, \u2018rubber crumb\u2019, also has shock absorbent qualities too, and helps to keep the synthetic grass upright.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4G and the future<\/span><\/b> \u2013 Those claiming to have developed 4G artificial pitches say it is like 3G artificial turf, but without the need for rubber crumb. While these types of synthetic turf do exist, and could therefore be claimed as 4G, they have not yet been officially graded as a new technology, nor are they governed by any recognised standards. It can therefore be misleading for 3G football pitches without a rubber crumb to be labelled this way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
