Piopio Primary School

TigerTurf NZ recently carried out a comprehensive DeMoss cleaning project at Piopio Primary School, aimed at reviving the school’s synthetic turf. The work was completed over a three-day period and focused on restoring both the appearance and performance of the turf, which had suffered from years of limited maintenance. The buildup of moss and excess infill had reduced the surface’s safety and usability, prompting the need for specialist intervention.

Prior to beginning the project, TigerTurf coordinated closely with the school’s administration to establish access restrictions and minimise disruption to students and staff. This careful planning ensured the work could proceed smoothly and safely within the set timeframe.
The maintenance process followed a structured scope. It began with the initial surface preparation, which involved the removal of organic buildup such as moss, algae, and general debris. This step was essential in creating a clean foundation for the grooming work to follow. Surface grooming was then undertaken to loosen and lift compacted materials, allowing the turf fibres to stand upright again. Using TigerTurf’s specialised equipment, excess and contaminated infill was extracted, restoring the surface’s balance and improving playability.

To support long-term results, a chemical treatment was applied across the cleaned surface. This treatment helps to control and prevent the future growth of moss and algae, reducing the likelihood of rapid deterioration and keeping the area safer and cleaner for longer.
The de-moss cleaning was successfully completed, with noticeable improvements in the turf’s aesthetics and usability. The renewed surface now provides Piopio Primary School students with a safer, more visually appealing play space. This project underlines the value of proactive turf maintenance—not only in enhancing the surface’s immediate appearance but also in reducing future repair costs and extending the turf’s overall lifespan.
