Hunterville School

TigerTurf was engaged by Hunterville School to develop an engaging and versatile games area covering 286 m² on an existing asphalt base in Hunterville. Work began in early 2025, with planning focusing on a surface that could accommodate a wide range of play activities suited for imaginative games. By July 2025, the installation of TigerTurf’s “Trophy” product was completed, featuring an olive-green base carpet complemented by colourful game markings. The layout showcased a number snake, alpha blocks, and assorted shapes—all carefully painted in vibrant tones—encouraging creativity and learning as part of everyday play.

Engaging Play Area For Multi-purpose Play

Engaging Play Area For Multi-purpose Play

Trophy was chosen specifically for its multi-sport versatility and robust performance, ideal for school playgrounds. Accredited to FIH National standards for hockey, ITF Fast for tennis, and AENA for netball, it delivers a firm and responsive playing experience underfoot. Its durable, stable construction makes it suitable for regular use across a variety of activities, while its ability to handle ball bounce, spin, and wet conditions means that Year 1 to Year 8 students can enjoy everything from circle games to ball sports without concern. The surface’s all-weather capability also ensures that play doesn’t stop on rainy days—a real advantage in New Zealand’s varied climate.

Beyond sports, the patterned line markings support imaginative and educational play. The number snake and alpha blocks are designed to foster numeracy and literacy in a simple yet effective manner. Children can hop along the snake to practise counting, or jump between letters to form words. This playful integration of learning encourages physical activity while supporting curriculum goals; it prompts children to combine movement, creativity and cognitive skills in a natural, unstructured way.

Installation took place directly onto the prepared asphalt base. TigerTurf’s team ensured correct surface drainage and even compaction before rolling out the carpet. The olive green colour offered visual consistency with the school grounds, while the assorted colours of the games markings were carefully chosen to delight students and catch their attention. Thanks to the product’s robust backing and high‑quality yarn, the surface resists wear—even in high-traffic zones such as around classrooms and under shaded trees. By avoiding excess turf decoration and unnecessary detailing, the finished area offers a clean and purposeful result.

Since opening, the games area has become a hub of activity, used across break times, physical education, and outdoor learning sessions. Teachers have noted how easily the games can be incorporated into lesson plans, with students inventing their own counting or spelling challenges on the fly. The ease of maintenance—simply sweeping or rinsing—means the surface stays looking fresh, even after heavy use. TigerTurf’s Trophy product has therefore delivered on its promise: a durable, engaging, multi-purpose surface that supports both formal sports and creative learning, and continues to stand out as a valued addition to school life at Hunterville.
