“The new court is a fabulous asset for our students who use it continuously and enthusiastically
for organised sport and play” Bruce Warren, Principal
Mairangi Bay’s problem with its sports
field is common for many schools. The
problem is further exacerbated by
precious school land being taken up
with new classrooms and other essential
facilities, reducing the land area available
for outdoor pursuits.
With the main sports field closed and the growth of the school roll, a synthetic multi-sport surface was an ideal solution. A portion of the main natural field closest to the classrooms was selected as the ideal location for this new area.
The necessary funds were raised by an energetic PTA through think-a-thons, run-a-thons and the like. The project was completed with the PTA, school, and local contractors in collaboration with TigerTurf. TigerTurf provided the initial design and budgetary assessment, with advice on civil construction, as well as the manufacture and installation of the final playing surface.
The synthetic surface needed to be suitable for a number of different sports including basketball, netball and hockey as well as activities such as football, cricket and general PE.
After reviewing a range of possible products, the school opted for TigerTurf’s new surface, Trophy, a soft, yet highly durable multi-sport product. Dressed with a light sand infill, the
surface is soft, provides sure footing and delivers consistent ball bounce and roll – perfect for a range of ball sports.
The new surface has been a huge hit with the children, teachers and parents.
It is used for a wide range of activities from trials for the hockey, netball and basketball teams through to PE class activities and informal play at breaks and lunchtime – “A truly fantastic surface that has helped transform our school”.
