Makarewa School

Makarewa School, located just north of Invercargill, had a vision to revitalise its ageing outdoor court into a vibrant, multi-use facility that would serve its students and wider community for years to come. After three years of dedicated fundraising and planning, the school’s efforts came to fruition in April 2025 with the completion of an 880m² multi-sport court, installed by TigerTurf in collaboration with Southern Turf and Sports.

Courtside Transformation

The school approached TigerTurf with a clear goal: to replace their worn-out court with a modern, durable surface that could support a range of sports. The project began with D Roberts Fencing, who removed the old fencing and installed new poles and mesh. They also prepared the site with a new brush-finished concrete base, setting the stage for the next phase of the transformation.
TigerTurf’s local agent, Southern Turf and Sports, took over the installation, laying down the high-performance Trophy surface over a Sine Pad III underlay. Trophy is a sand-dressed synthetic turf designed for multi-sport use, offering excellent playability for netball, hockey, and other school sports. Its durable construction and consistent ball response make it a popular choice for schools across New Zealand.

The Sine Pad III underlay added another layer of performance, providing shock absorption and improved comfort underfoot. It also helps with drainage and extends the life of the turf by reducing wear on the surface

A Court Designed for All-Weather Play

The finished court features a striking colour scheme with a dark green outer and blue inner, complemented by crisp white and yellow line markings. It includes a full-sized netball court and two hockey D’s, giving students a versatile space for physical education and recreational play. The design not only enhances the school’s sports programme but also creates a safe, all-weather surface that can be used year-round.

Reflecting on the project, Principal Kevin Silcock shared his appreciation: “Great to work with Jason and his team, they communicated well and kept me informed of their progress.” The successful delivery of the court is a testament to the collaboration between the school, contractors, and TigerTurf’s experienced team.
Makarewa School’s new court is more than just a sports facility—it’s a symbol of community effort and long-term investment in student wellbeing. With a surface built to last and designed for performance, the school now has a space that encourages active play, skill development, and school pride.

Trophy

TigerTurf Trophy is a dressed surface designed for multi-sport use in schools and clubs. It is excellent for hockey* and tennis and meets the exacting standards of an FIH National category sand dressed field as well as being ITF fast paced certified. It also provides consistent performance for sports such as basketball, netball and playgrounds, as well as a brilliant multi-purpose surface suitable for general Gym use.
