Education
The outdoor areas at Tarawera High
School were not great. So TigerTurf
was asked to design an all-weather,
high performance sports facility that
could be used throughout the year by
both students and the community and
accommodate several different sports.
With no hockey fields near enough for
the students to practise on regularly, a
hockey pitch was near the top of the list.
To overcome the local conditions, the TigerTurf team set to work, excavating the area to establish effective drainage that would keep the pitch dry throughout the wet winters. Then a dynamic base was constructed, suitable for absorbing the energy of pounding feet, an important factor to consider when considering the hours sports teams spend training and
playing on the sports surfaces.
TigerTurf’s Tournament 1000 was selected as it is an ideal turf for a range of sports. It withstands heavy use in variable conditions, providing a high standard of performance throughout the seasons, over many years, offering great value for schools.
The hockey pitch has been constructed so that lights can be added in the future, giving the opportunity for extended playing hours. In addition to the hockey pitch, there are four netball courts ready for play, and around the perimeter, a running track is ready for action, including a run-up to the long jump pit.
During the rebuild, the school had to remove some large trees, which have been milled and used to make outdoor lunch tables and seating for the students. Tarawera High School now has welldesigned areas for recreation and sports that the whole community will enjoy. It will be all go when the school is officially opened by the Education Minister, Hekia Parata, at the end of January.
