Six questions to help you choose the right Synthetic Turf

At TigerTurf, we have a large range of different surfaces you can choose from.  So, how do you choose the right synthetic turf surface for your specific requirements?  There are many different things you need to take into consideration, and with the options available, it can sometimes get confusing. 

We like to ask some questions when helping you to choose the best synthetic turf for your needs:

How will the turf be used?

• What sports will the turf be mainly used for?
• What level of performance will be demanded from the surface (will it be used for an international standard of competition, or community standard of play)?
• What is the expected level of intensity of use?
• Assuming appropriate maintenance is carried out, what is the desired lifespan of the surface system?
• What standard of facility can you afford to build and operate?
• What is the lifespan or income-generating period required from your synthetic grass pitch?

Once the type of turf is determined, consider the following with regard to specific products or suppliers:

• Does the product have a licence issued by the governing body, relevant for use at the level required for the project (e.g. FIFA Pro, FIFA Quality Pro, FIH Global or National, AFL/Cricket (Australia only), World Rugby)
• Has the supplier installed this type of sports surface in similar climates before? (Carryout reference checks on the product and the installer).
• Does the team undertaking the installation have the appropriate experience?

Compare quality before price

You have decided to replace grass with artificial turf, probably because the grass is not performing well:

• Focus on quality – you need the best quality turf for the area you are going to be covering.
• Consider the surroundings and who is going to be using the turf.
• Ask for samples and specifications of several turf options.

How many people are going to be using the turf?

• Consider how many people are going to be using the turf:
• What they will be using it for – dog walking, public access way, weekend sports, training & coaching, tournaments?
• Do not install a turf designed for a low-traffic area in a high-traffic area – it will need to be replaced on a regular basis.
• The higher the traffic, the more durable the artificial turf needs to be.

What conditions will the turf be exposed to?

• The location will affect the maintenance plan for your artificial turf. 
• Does the area become boggy in winter – is it necessary to plan for good drainage?
• Will your turf be in an area that is prone to tree debris, shade or other organic pollutants?  It will need more attention than a turf that is in an open area.
• Choose a product that needs reduced maintenance.  This will save you hours of work and running costs in the future.

How big is the size of the area you are covering?

• The size of the area you are covering needs to be assessed:
• Larger areas mean higher maintenance costs (but won’t affect your price per square metre)
• Larger areas provide greater all-weather playing surfaces providing more practical and functional real estate
