FatPlate was the first invention from keen golfer, Adam Smith who spotted a gap in the market for a portable, visual golf training aid that encourages the user to bring the strike-point closer to the ball, giving you that crucial ‘ball then turf’ descending strike.

Padel Court 11 is a short pile, texturised, monofilament fibre surface, part filled with sand to improve player performance and ball bounce. This specifically designed product uses texturised yarns that are durable and therefore great for all levels of play, whether indoor or outdoor.
Fatplate. Discovering that using natural grass just wouldn’t work due to rate of wear, Adam and the FatPlate R&D team set out to find an artificial grass surface to use instead.
After trialling many different options, TigerTurf’s Padel 11 came out on top.
Adam commented, “Padel 11 was amongst a number of turfs sourced from many manufacturers and was significantly the best performer during initial trials. We carried out strike-tests for 1000s of hours and it didn’t show any significant signs of flattening or loosening of the pile. Padel 11 was the only premier surface that had the low profile that we required.”
Fast forward a few months and FatPlate we’re already developing new products and opening their first studio at The Belfry, home of the National PGA Headquarters.
“Due to our trials, and, further to our success with Paddle 11, we knew that TigerTurf’s range would be perfect for our new studio. We selected Golf 18 as a low profile was not a consideration for the Studio floor surfaces.”
For their new training studio, the team required a surface that allowed for irons to be struck from any area of the flooring covered. Holes were also cut in the surface for rubber tee pegs holders so that golfers could tee up a golf ball to use with a driver. Golf 18 proved to be the perfect surface for indoor putting lessons to take place, in fact, the whole studio has been widely applauded and numerous professional golfers have suggested that it is the best surface in terms of feel that they have ever used.
Adam continued “We provided The Belfry with new coaching room for their professionals and the quality of the surface together with the room graphics have made the studio a fantastic addition to the National PGA Headquarters.
Many lessons are given from the room due to the quality of the surface. The studio also attracts elite golfers and Today’s Golfer film monthly club and ball testing reviews in there due to the quality of strike given off the Golf 18 surface. The surface is so good that TaylorMade, PING & Callaway have also asked us to quote on providing the same flooring in their Studios.”
With their flagship studio up and running at The Belfry, FatPlate have since developed a putting training aid called PuttPlate and a mirror hybrid of the original FatPlate. They have also taken over another studio at Stonebridge Golf Club, keen to keep developing golfers’ skills both on and off the course.
