3 million crisp packets recycled into one ecocept base
2021 saw the launch of the Walkers RePlay, a community initiative that transforms crisp packets back into community sports pitches. In conjunction with the Cruyff Foundation, Walkers collaborated with a range of key partners to deliver a first of its kind pitch in the UK – made from 3 million 100% recycled crisp packets.
The Cruyff Foundation are known for their famous Cruyff Courts a fantastic community initiative that provides a safe place for children to play sport. Cruyff Courts believe ‘Children need a safe place that encourages them to play outside. That’s what Cruyff Courts are: a safe place to get together and where children get to know the importance of togetherness, making friends, discovering your own talents, and winning and losing. These are valuable experiences that they carry with them as they develop physically and mentally, and as they move into society’.
The Walkers RePlay programme aims to increase participation and diversity in sport, tying in closely with the objectives of the Cruyff Foundation.
The field, built in Leicester (home of Walkers) by Fosse Contracts, comprised of an ecocept base layer that incorporated the 3 million recycled crisp packets. The layer, already created to provide unrivalled playability and sustainability benefits, saves up to 190 tonnes of carbon emissions and diverts 100 tonnes of material from landfill compared to traditional methods.
Our sister company, GreenFields provided a non-filled surface to top the ecocept base creating a sustainable system for the local community to use for many years to come.
The field was proudly opened by Gary Lineker in September 2021, along with Emilie Heskey, Steve Walsh, Matt Elliot and Leicester City Ladies and England International, Abbie McManus, Ashleigh Plumptre and Sophie Barker.
